MRAUK U

About one hour 30 minutes by air from Yangon to Sittwe. From there you can take a boat ride taking about 3 hours to Mrauk U. It was founded in A.D 1430 by king Min Saw Mon. Being an ancient city of Rakhain Kingdom with several architectural remains of its glorious past, Mrauk U is on its way to becoming one of the major archaeological and historical sites in Myanmar.
 

The most famous Pagoda in Mrauk U is Mahamuni Shrine. Other places to visit include Shitthaung Pagoda, Dukkanthein Pagoda, koethaung Pagoda, Laymyetnha pagoda and Andawthein Shrine. Sittwe is the starting point for boat excursions to Mrauk Oo.


 

Side Trip: While in Mrauk U, you can take a short boat trip to Chin Village to see the women with tattoos on their faces. It is their ancient customs preserved by them.
